In 2002 the Holy See published the 3rd typical edition of the Roman Missal. This introductory material, The General Instruction of the Roman Missal (GIRM) has been translated and published in advance of the rest of the Missal, to assist the dioceses of England and Wales in their continuing work of promoting worthy celebration of the Church’s liturgy and of the Mass in particular.
Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O’Connor writes: "The new Roman Missal and the revised General Instruction have been prepared by the Holy See in light of the years of experience of celebrating the Order of the Mass as reformed by the Second Vatican Council. It offers fresh encouragement and guidance for the worthy celebration of the Church’s liturgy in every parish and community.
"...I encourage every priest, deacon and member of the lay faithful to study the contents of this General Instruction and to find here fresh inspiration for the preparation and the celebration of Mass."
