The distribution in Britain is concentrated in the eastern counties of Norfolk, Suffolk and Lincolnshire. Further west it tend to hybridize with S.cinerea ssp. oleifolia.
Called grey sallow because fo the fine downy hairs that grow along the stem and leaves which give it a very distinctive appearance. It has a fantastic display of catkins in March and April on 1 year old stems which come out before the leaves. They can be cut at this stage for flower arranging as the catkins stay on the stem. We suggest coppicing them every year but in late April to make the most of the catkin display.
If left it will grow to a shrub of 4-6m high.
