Salix daphnoides is a large shrub or small tree which grows to between 6 and 8m, and occasionally to 12m. It has a rounded crown with erect or spreading branches. The bark is smooth and grey and its twigs, when young, are a very attractive violet colour which takes on a white bloom when 2-3 years old.
It has very attractive catkins appearing before the leaves at the end of February/beginning of March.
Generally not considered native this tree is however widely planted in gardens and parks. It is best either left as a standard or coppiced on a 2-4 year cycle.
